Roger Ballen (born in New-York, United States in 1950) is indisputably one of the most important photographers of his generation. He has lived and worked in South Africa for more than 30 years.
Over the past thirty years, his distinctive photographic style has evolved with the use of a simple, pure, black and white square format. Although he enjoyed a close relationship with the tradition of documentary photography in previous works, the artist developed his own style during the nineties: Ballenesque.
In his recent series, the artist used drawing, painting, collage and sculpture techniques to create elaborate decors. Ballen progressively invented a new, hybrid aesthetic in his oeuvre, which remains firmly anchored in photography.
In his artistic practice, Ballen is increasingly captivated with the possibilities of integrating photography and drawing and consequently broadened his visual language and repertoire. By integrating drawings in his photographic and video pieces, the artist elaborates a powerful testimony on the human condition and its creative potential.
